Rainforest Rangers is a program of the Rainforest 4 Foundation on a mission of global rainforest restoration. It is an all-inclusive movement of people who want to see a greener world full of thriving, healthy rainforests.
Our restoration projects under this program are located across Australia, in the Big Scrub Rainforest in Northern New South Wales, and the Atherton Tableland and Daintree Rainforest of Far North Queensland. Across these sites, we work closely with local people, landowners and land managers, community and non-profit groups, and governments to achieve the best outcomes for these ecosystems.
The rainforests in these areas have experienced devastating deforestation and are still facing ongoing threats of land clearing and invasive weed degradation. These rainforests are biodiversity hotspots and all host immense opportunities for reforestation, regeneration, and local community involvement in the custodianship of rainforests.
Goal 1 – 1 million trees by June 2023
Our first goal is to achieve 1 million trees established by 2023. This will be achieved through science-based methods for reforestation including tree planting and assisted natural regeneration. Through this, Rainforest 4 Foundation will begin its contribution to the Trillion Tree Campaign, a project announced at the 2020 World Economic Forum which aims to plant one trillion trees worldwide by the end of the decade. This campaign provides support to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2020-2030), led by UNEP and FAO.
We encourage all people of all ages and abilities to become a Rainforest Ranger and get involved in restoring the Earth’s rainforests. Many tree plantings and rainforest activities are open to volunteers so keep an eye out on the Rainforest Rangers events page and Facebook page for events. Rangers can also fundraise and contribute to the 1 million tree goal by donating trees to each restoration site so even if you are far away from these places you can help restore these rainforests.
Contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
The Rainforest Rangers program is contributing to several UN Sustainable Development Goals:
