Biodiversity is more than a buzzword — it’s the foundation of life on Earth. And right now, it’s under serious threat.

Across the globe, ecosystems are collapsing. Species are disappearing. But in the heart of our rainforests lies a powerful solution: protecting and restoring biodiversity.

At Rainforest Rangers, we’re working on the frontlines to restore critically endangered rainforests in Australia — and with every tree planted, we’re rebuilding biodiversity from the ground up.

What Is Biodiversity? And Why Should You Care

Biodiversity is the variety of life — from the tiniest insects to the tallest trees, every organism plays a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced and healthy.

In rainforests, biodiversity is especially rich. Just one hectare can contain thousands of species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. But when these forests are cleared or degraded, the entire web of life begins to unravel.

Why Biodiversity is Crucial for Climate, Water & Wildlife

When we protect biodiversity, we’re not just saving animals — we’re also:

Stabilising the climate – Diverse ecosystems absorb and store more carbon.

Protecting water systems – Biodiverse forests regulate rainfall and reduce flood risks.

Saving Threatened Species – Every tree planted helps restore vital habitats for threatened wildlife.

Strengthening resilience – Ecosystems with high biodiversity recover faster from disasters like floods, fires, and droughts.

The Problem: We’re Losing Biodiversity Fast

Over 1 million species globally are at risk of extinction — and Australia has one of the worst biodiversity loss rates in the developed world.

In Northern NSW alone, 99% of subtropical rainforest has been cleared, leaving native species like the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and the Spotted-tailed Quoll without homes.

But this loss isn’t inevitable. We can reverse it — one tree at a time.

The Solution: Restoring Rainforests = Restoring Biodiversity

Through direct tree planting, we’re doing more than planting trees — we’re planting entire ecosystems.

Each tree species we plant has a purpose:

  • Some provide food for pollinators.

  • Others create shelter for birds and mammals.

  • Many support soil fungi that help trees grow stronger together.

By planting a mix of native species, we’re building habitats that support insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals — all working together in harmony.
