For much of the 40 million years after Australia drifted away from the Gondwana landmass, rainforests covered most of the continent. By the time of European settlement, rainforests covered just 1% of Australia’s land area. Subsequent clearing for agriculture and settlement has driven even greater losses — today, only about a quarter of the rainforest that existed at the time of European settlement survives. Rehabilitating and restoring our rainforests to increase habitat cover and landscape connectivity is critical to help prevent further biodiversity loss and species extinctions.
